I have 4 windows open. On one of them, choosing 'Dial...' from the menu brings up the popup screen with a phone number showing, and can be used to initiate a call. But in the other 3 windows, the popup shows 'null', and, when a number is entered, nothing happens when 'OK' is clicked.
This happens intermittently...
I've found "Hangup" function very useful in some occasions. Not sure why it is removed from v0.2.0b1. I found a workaround to make it working, i.e. hangup->wait for 50 seconds->hangup again. At the second click of Hangup after 50 seconds, the call will hang up no problem. Not sure if it is a bug in GV or in the addon.
Great addon. Thanks.
Update...
By opening new windows while in the operable one, all new tabs in those new windows become operable also. So I did that for all the formerly non-operable windows/tabs, and all's fine right now...
Chad, any update on the ability to use the click to call in the sidebar?
Thanks
Josh
Whenever 'null' appears in the "Please enter the phone number" popup, I can 'cure' it by opening the page in a new window.
(Contrary to my previous post, it's NOT necessary to open the new window from an already operating one.)
Hi Chad, thanks for sharing the POST requests for placing calls/sending SMS. I was wondering if you can explain how exactly to extract the _rnr_se & id parameters that appear in those requests. Thanks in advance...
Sorry everyone, the OpenID login still isn't working. I am hoping the plugin for bbPress is updated soon, but I doubt it since it's been that way for several months.
@ranmor
The ID field for SMS messages is used to mark what conversation a message belongs to. Since we are sending messages that are not necessarily part of a conversation, we skip it in the addon. The _rnr_se parameter contains what I am assuming is your Google Voice session id. It can be pulled from pretty much any page on Google Voice using /'_rnr_se'\: '([^']+)'/
No click-to-call functionality for me. I've installed the add-on in Firefox 3.0.8 on WinXP SP3, restarted Firefox, entered GV account info, and went to a GMail contact. There's the number on the screen, but no click-to-call available with right click or double click.
I've also tried doing the same in a new Firefox profile. Same deal.
I must be missing something obvious!
@Jonathan...Is the number on the screen a 'live link'?
If so, does the call popup appear when you click on the number?
If so, does the phone number show in the call popup?
(Please note: I'm no expert; have older Firefox version on a Mac; but have experienced some similar issues and hopefully may be of help.)
@Jonathan
The addon is not able to detect numbers that load dynamically via AJAX or other voodoo magic since it only checks when the page first loads. You can have it recheck for numbers by double clicking your number in the status bar, or can select a number and double click the status bar to call it.
Chad -
Thanks for the URL's for the GV hack. I'm trying to do the same without a browser. Can you give me a little info as to the order of operations before a POST? Like the login URL to get your cookies, which cookies to use, and post elements?
never mind. figured everything out.
I have a Windows Mobile application that dials and does SMS now. Anyone that would like to beta can find it here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=512865
Has progress on this stopped?
Nope. I'm still here
Good to hear.. What's on the plate? Any new features? Anything yet with the sidebar?
I still need to fix the statusbar popup so it would say missed call/placed call/received text/sent text/voicemai/etc rather than just "Called xx minutes ago", and I need to see if there's a bug that's making it say "Calling xxx-xxx-xxxx from null" when the Forwarding Number contains something other than just digits. Once that's done I will finally release v0.2.0 that's been in beta forever.
Since there weren't really any major bugs I haven't done much with else it recently and have been focusing on work, coffee, beer, and other projects instead. I do have something different in the works for the sidebar though. Firefox doesn't treat it as a DOM element, so it's not easily accessible from addons or the web. Instead I am working with plain old JavaScript to read numbers on a page and turn them into links routed through a PHP page you can host off your own computer or server.
Beta Release: v0.2.0b2
Since v0.2.0b1
Since v0.1.1
I am finally playing around with the notifications too, and got it to report if there are any new messages, but still do not know how to make toaster popups (except for Pop Tarts).
Please report any issues so I can release it and update the addon on Mozilla.org.
Enjoy.
chad,
first off, i think you are doing an excellent job, and i appreciate your work on this project. i am currently running 0.2.0b3, and click-to-call has definitely made my life easier.
i also have a feature question/suggestion for you. are you planning on having any kind of notification in the status bar for the number of unopened sms / voicemails, similar to gmail notifier and others for gmail? perhaps the information could be placed where the gvoice number is displayed now; my guess is that most gvoice users are like me, and have their number memorized, but i am of course biased.
i don't know if this is something anyone else would be interested in, but i think it would be a pretty useful feature for the add-on: to know i've received an sms without having to click or mouse over anything. my current solution is to leave a dedicated tab or window open to gvoice and mouse over it occasionally to see if it has a number in parentheses next to the "Google Voice - Inbox".
looks like you are finalizing your 0.2.0 release, so maybe if this is something you consider worthwhile, this could make it into the feature set for 0.3.0?
narkfly,
I am thinking about doing that instead of popups for the notifications, mainly because the Gmail Notifier popup annoys me more than it is helpful. Hopefully it will be ready before v0.3.0 since it already pulls the number of unread voicemails and messages.
RE: v0.2.0b4:
I'm not sure if this would be super useful, since most phone numbers published online aren't cell phones, but with phone numbers now clickable through firefox, could we have the option of sending an SMS text? It might be useful to some members.
Another thing I noticed after testing the click-to-call functionality by ringing a United Airlines number through to my cell phone, after clicking "Close" my voicemail still picked up UA's robotic menu system on the other side. Can we change "OK" and "Cancel" to either "Close" and "Hang-Up" respectively? The "Calling ### from ###" JavaScript window stays on top and prevents usage of the browser window, so it would be helpful to have those buttons clarified.
Otherwise, thanks for a great plug-in! Looking forward to future developments!
RE: v0.2.0b4:
I've installed the 0.2.0b4 code in Flock 2.5, and I can't get the Settings to work. I right-click on the GVAdd-In space in the status bar, (currently filled with the message "email and password missing from settings") and choose Settings... What happens next is that I see OK and Cancel buttons appear, with absolutely nothing behind them. (Actually the "l" at the end of Cancel appears to be a different color.) I can move any windows (including Flock) out from behind these buttons, and they hover over the desktop. I can select a desktop icon that's mostly behind one of the buttons, which tells me that there is no invisible window holding them.
When I press Cancel I get a message about being required to provide an e-mail address.
I know Flock is not supported atm, but I figured you would want to know.
Thanks and regards,
Daniel
Hi All -
I am not a developer but I am somewhat tech savvy. Hoping someone can tell me if this tool can be modded to do what I need.
I need to send 300 SMS messages out to members of a little league. I have permission to text them and I have tried using Twitter , but the subscription model means only about 20% of folks actually register correctly (they don't understand Twitter).
Hoping I can script Gvoice to send these texts. The Gvoice number is our League Hotline number. This will also encourage folks to interact with the League using text instead of voice (schedule requests, scores, etc)
I can supply all parameters and probably construct the HTTP POST URLs. I just don't have the skillset to code anything here.
I am currently spending about $50/year on SMS services, which I need to reduce. Will this work? Someone willing to put me on the right track?
Thanks!
Steve
Beta Release: v0.2.0b5
Bug Fixes:
Which was given when double clicking the status bar (to rescan for numbers/dial the selected number/send the selected text as an SMS) in frames (or Gmail).
Is there anyway to implement who i am texting into the the addon....Like a drop down linked to contacts loaded from gmail....Or maybe add a csv that can be used..Vs knowing a number, which is impossible? Or even link to outlook?
Interestingly, I installed the new beta code (0.2.0b5) in Firefox 3.5 and Flock 2.5. The settings bug I described above still occurs in Flock. However, to my delight, the add-in in Flock seems to have picked up the settings that I entered in Firefox, and it appears to be functional, except for that settings dialog. I haven't tried all the features yet, but my number shows up in the Flock status bar as expected.
(continuing from previous post) However, even though the status bar shows my GV number and the add-in nicely converts phone numbers to links, clicking on one of those links (in Flock 2.5) does nothing. In Firefox 3.5.1, it works nicely.
I only wish it were easier to switch which phone is used for dial-back.
